Tales from the Recycling Center

Oh boy. What a day. So, I recycle my bottles and cans for two reasons: 1) it's good for the environment, and 2) it's fun extra money. I decided to go to the recycling center yesterday, because I had a lot of bottles, and I had let them pile up for way too long! Going to the center is just an experience in and of itself, and yesterday, I was up for the challenge. So I'm waiting in line with my bags (in my sweats of course... there's even a dress code for the recycling center) and I was standing in line behind this gentleman in the red tank top here in the picture above.(I took this photo with my cell phone, I couldn't resist.) He got my attention when he started speaking to the woman next to him giving her advice on how to put the cans in the machine... "you've got to put the CRV label up so that the machine can read it... and above all, you've got to have a little patience." And believe me, patience he had. He was there for a LONG time with all of those bags.

So I happen to look over at the man (let's call him "Red") and he was desperately trying to inflate one of his bottles that had been flattened. He stood at the machine, and tried every which way to inflate it enough for the machine to accept it. About a minute later, he retired from the process of using his hands apparently, because before I knew it, he had unscrewed the cap of the bottle, put his lips to the rim of the bottle and blew! Well, it worked, the bottle inflated, and the machine accepted it.

As if that isn't disgustingly entertaining enough, I look over to the other machine in an attempt to avert my eyes, and what do I see? A three year old standing on an upside down trash can, with his mom handing him Coors Light beer cans so that he can feed them into the machine. Sad? Perhaps. Young talent? Absolutely.

This concludes this edition of Tales from the Recycling Center. I invite you to go to your own recycling center and share your stories... it really is prime people watching!

He's Back!

I would like to announce, that as of January 2009 Jason Mesnick will be the next Bachelor in his quest for a soulmate. We all fell in love last season (okay, maybe it was just me) with this handsome fella and his sweet son, Ty. And all of our hearts were broken when DeAnna literally left him standing... about to propose. On that dramatic finale, not only was I screaming at the television when she left him brokenhearted, but later that night, I found myself on Delta.com trying to book a one-way ticket to Seattle! Not one of my shining moments.

Now, we get to see him when the shoe is on the other foot... The tables are turned, and now he has the upper hand to choose. Maybe it's good that I didn't know that they were casting for this... we know he has a track record of liking Greeks right?

Well, it's time for Jason to move on from the heartbreak, and I'll be right there watching every week. Hopefully, after this season, Jason and Ty won't be sleepless in seattle anymore. Here's to another season of my favorite guilty pleasure TV show, and to the best Bachelor the show has ever had!

Life's Simple Pleasures

Don't you just love life's little pleasures? Often I think that it is a combination of several small, simple things that make your day. This is one of the reasons why I love the holiday season because this is a time that we often notice these treasures. Here is one of mine: the red cups at Starbucks! Each November, we are greeted by a sea of red in our neighborhood Starbucks, and every time I enter the store and see it, it brings a smile to my face. Not only do these cups hold yummy drinks like pumpkin spice lattes, and peppermint mochas, but they bring a feeling of festivity into my soul. As finals are rapidly approaching, and the end of the semester is in sight, I have been studying for exams, writing papers and working on projects... and I have found solace sitting in Starbucks, in my own little corner sipping on my favorite holiday beverages. I love the hustle and bustle of people coming in and out, laughter, good music, and the smell of cookies, baked goods and spice!

I love Christmastime, and although I am not quite ready for Christmas music, and to haul out the holly, the red cups offer an entry into the wonderful world of winter. Welcome red cups, welcome winter, now let's bring on the cold weather! :)

Bonnie and Me

I met Bonnie. I met Bonnie. I met Bonnie. This is the very sentence that I had to keep repeating to myself over and over again last week, and pinching myself to make sure that it was real, and not just another dream.

Last week, my dear Thia Karen, two of her sweet fun friends and I attended another taping of The Bonnie Hunt Show... but this time, we were VIP guests! We didn't have to wait in line and got to wear those fun passes around our necks and feel like we were really somebody. To our pleasant surprise, Bonnie was coming outside to the audience that day where we wait to get in before the show to do a little pre-show audience taping and talk with some of the audience members about the upcoming election. So naturally I was thinking... Me + Bonnie + talking about things I'm passionate about = Sheer excitement. We were all very elated... especially Karen and I and I'm sure that I definitely scared her sweet friends with my crazy antics. (When Karen and I started talking about the fact that we know that Bonnie dyes her hair from a box from Walgreens, that was our first indication that we may have crossed the line.)

Anyway, I won't bore you with the details of how this all went down, but here's the bottom line, blog buddies. I met Bonnie. I met Bonnie Hunt. We're not talking a little handshake... she interviewed me on camera, and we had a really fun chat! She put her arm around me, we talked about our hair, she called me 'honey,' we laughed (I mean we might as well just call it a slumber party right?) We also chatted about the election, but don't worry friends, I made sure to make a few jokes in there in addition to talking about my views on things! We laughed together, and I think it's safe to say that it was one of the very best moments. Meeting Bonnie has been on my list of things to do before I die that has been written on my heart for years! Well, actually "lunch with Bonnie" was the thing that is specifically on my list... next time Bonnie (even if it's just a Chicago hot dog before your show!) :)

So friends, I apologize that it's taken me a week to blog about this marking event, but sadly, it's taken me almost that long to get over it! In times like these however, I can always count on good friends to keep me in check. When I texted Mel to tell her that I met Bonnie, she responded with this message:

"Oh Clo, please tell me that you were at a taping, and not outside of her house."

Maybe one day Bonnie will invite me over for coffee, but I would never go uninvited - a girl's gotta have her standards. But I will leave you with my new idea for her next season --- "The Bon and Clo Show" It has a nice ring to it don't you think????

A Show Tune A Day Keeps the Doctor Away...

I love Show Tunes. I just love them. I love the theatre, and I love Broadway shows. I'm always the first person to rush the little store and buy the soundtrack and listen to it until I'm blue in the face from singing the amazing ballads and group dance numbers.

Okay friends, I know it can be tempting to buy the soundtrack, listen to it once or twice, and never really pull it out again. But let me let you in on a little secret blog buddies... a show tune a day does wonders for your soul. There is something amazing that a score from your favorite show or even movie can do for your mood and your day. Whether it's rocking out to a big group dance number from Hairspray, marching into battle with the cast of Les Mis, going through the seasons of love with the cast of Rent, graduating high school with Danny, Sandy and the cast of Grease, or Defying Gravity with Elphaba in Wicked (don't even get me started.) Listening to a favorite show tune can indeed pull you out of a funk, or make your already good mood that much better.

So friends, take a minute today to dust off that old album, pop it into your CD player,  sing your heart out, and bring out your inner Elphaba. Or do what I do and keep them all in your car so that when the need arises, and you're sitting in traffic contemplating life and wondering where it all went wrong... you can pop in your CD, turn the track to your favorite song and suddenly you're not in traffic on the 5... You're a Broadway star on an amazing set, with a giant orchestra behind you and a packed out house! :)

Missed Connections and Banana Squash...

So I usually keep my blog free of rantings, however my day yesterday was just too classic to not vent and share with you blog buddies! Yesterday, October 7th, I was supposed to leave for Nashville, TN for an internship interview at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. My flight was supposed to leave at 11:55 so I got to the airport at about 10:15 to give me enough time to check in and get settled before the flight (plus it's always fun to sit with your coffee and people watch - airports are the best!) When I check in, they weigh my bag and it was 54 lbs... 4 lbs. over the legal limit for domestic flights. The nice, older man at the counter (who I think was joking around when he took me by the hand, looked at the absence of a wedding ring and said, "okay hun, now that I don't see a ring on that finger, I think there's something I can do for you.") But hey, I only had to take out a book and he let the rest go, so God bless him!! ;)

So we're on the plane, getting ready to take off and all of a sudden the captain comes on the PA - never a good sign. He said that the right engine was not starting and that we needed to go back to the gate for the mechanic to take a look at it. An hour later, we take off and I'm trying not to worry about the connection that I have to make in Atlanta which is only an hour layover. We finally arrive in Atlanta at 7:50 p.m. and my flight leaves at 8:06 p.m. for Nashville. Not only that, but it was in a different terminal! By the time I got off the plane (I was in the back of course) it was 7:59. I ran like hell through the airport and got to the gate at 8:03 p.m. only to discover that the doors were closed and my plane that was scheduled to depart at 8:06 had already left. Not only that, there was no representative at the gate!!! So he finally shows up and directs me to the Customer Service Center to see if I can get on another flight.

So defeated and out of breath, I make my way to the Customer Service Center in the next terminal. After explaining what happened (which they were clearly not interested in my story, but I sure as heck told them anyway) they rescheduled me on the next flight out which was at 9:50 p.m. The name of the center is ironic because there was absolutely nothing customer oriented about this experience, no apology... nothing. BUT, now comes the GOOD NEWS!! I did get a $7 voucher for dinner to use in the food court. I thought to myself... you have got to be kidding me.

So I make my way over to the food court and decide to get myself some "dinner" - after all it really is about the silver lining. Thank you Delta. So I stand in line at Sbarro and decide to get the #1 combo which comes with a slice of pizza, a side of veggies, and a diet coke for $6.89. So I get up to the counter, give them my voucher, pick up my tray and start to leave with my bags only to discover that my meal came to $7.37. I actually OWED them 37 cents! Of course I didn't have change on me so I had to break a dollar. So I walked over to a table with my bags and my tray and my pocket full of change, and my side of veggies that was primarily composed of cooked carrots and banana squash - (neither of which I eat on a regular basis) and began to pick at my pizza and my side of veggies with a plastic "spork."

So I get to my gate (early I might add) and thankfully right next to my gate is a starbucks. It was like God was sending me a hug from heaven. I make my way over there because I think to myself that the only thing that was going to redeem this day was a venti pumpkin spice latte to take on the plane. I get in line only to learn that they are closing and all they are selling is coffee and tea. So with my dreams of pumpkin spice dashed, I settled for coffee, got on the plane and after another 30 min. weather delay on the runway, I finally got to Nashville!! Hooray for good friends and big hugs to make my day!!!

So blog buddies... if you ever find yourself walking aimlessly around the Atlanta airport due to a missed connection, eating cold pizza and veggies with a spork, and you have been mistreated by a trusted airline, please know that you are not alone and you have a friend in me.

Camp Reach for the Stars

I just got back from such a great, memorable weekend in the beautiful mountains of Santa Barbara! I volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Reach for the Stars which is a camp that is put on by the American Cancer Society every year for children with cancer and their families. It was such a neat experience, and something new which I always love. It's a great weekend away camping in the mountains for families and kids to not have to think about cancer or treatment and just have fun.

For those of you who know me, this was definitely out of my comfort zone because I'm not typically a "camper" :), but this was one of the most fun, rewarding experiences. I mean, I hiked...in the rain!! I "braved the elements." This was a great experience, not only with the families, but with the other counselors as well...it's always fun to make new friends and meet new people from all walks of life.

Each camp counselor is assigned to a family for the weekend, and the family that I had was incredible. I took tons of pictures, but for legal reasons due the nature of the camp I can't post the pictures of the kids, but I sure can tell you about them! :) I had the privilege of hanging out with an 8 year old boy battling leukemia and his large, but incredibly precious family with 6 kids under the age of 9!!! I definitely had the largest family there by far, and there was never a dull moment that's for sure. I spent the weekend giving piggy back rides, pushing the tire swing, playing games, running, skipping, hiking, treckin' through mud and giggling.

As counselors, we also hung out with the kids while the parents participated in much needed facials, massages, and support groups with one another. Some of the families have been coming to this camp for years and have built great relationships. In addition to all of the activities, the camp began on Friday with the opening ceremonies where the families bring ashes of the camp fire from last year to kick off this year's camp with the hopes and dreams from the previous years of staff and campers. Throughout the weekend, the families have "wishing scrolls" where they write down their hopes, wishes and dreams and then they share them with everyone if they want to and then throw them into the fire on the last night to close. A lot of the parents wished for good health, and a cure for cancer. Some of the kids got up to share at the closing campfire and it brought tears to my eyes when one of my kids got up there and said, "I wish for no more cancer."

Not only was this weekend a new, fun experience but it was so neat to get a glimpse into the lives of these families who are battling this disease. Cancer, or any other terminal disease for that matter, really does affect the whole family, and it truly is amazing to learn about how these families cope with it. So although every muscle in my body aches, and I'm beyond exhausted, it was a fun weekend had by all!

~ Bonnie Hunt ~

Oh my goodness, today is a day that will go down in the books as one of my most favorite days!! I got to go to a taping of Bonnie Hunt's new talk show! I have been trying to get tickets since she started a couple of weeks ago, and I have been faithfully watching her talk show every day. I have been a big fan of Bonnie and have been following her career since I was little! One of my favorite Bonnie movies was Return to Me, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. Did you know that she wrote the screenplay and directed it? She's so talented (enter Bonnie Chicago accent.) :)

So I get this phone call this weekend from my dear Aunt Karen (who is also a Bonnie fan) and she got tickets to today's show for us! Needless to say, we cancelled our plans, worked around our work/school schedules and went. We had such a fun little group: Auntie Karen, her friend Sandy (j'adore her by the way) me, and my mom!!! We had such an amazing time. Bonnie's studio (look at me talking like I know her) is at the Culver City Studios, and it was so fun to be at cute downtown Culver City... Bonnie just fits right in there. We were among the first in line for the show this afternoon, AND the best part...we got front row seats!!!! I think they could tell how huge of Bonnie fans we were so they put us right in front. :) The show was amazing... Amy Brenneman from Private Practice was on and so was Josh Kelly. They gave each of us the first season of Private Practice on DVD which was really fun too. Bonnie came into the audience a lot, we were inches from her... it was just so exciting!

Her set is so neat. She is inspired by Dean Martin in so many ways and it shows in her amazing set. She has a grand piano, warm colors and charming family photos on the walls. We have lots of fun pictures too! In fact, we might have gotten a little carried away. We were taking pictures all around the lot... by the Culver Studios service trucks, the houses, and even ON the golf carts that the pages drive around. We also tracked down her make-up artist and got a picture with her. We even got "escorted" out by one of the staff members. oops! ;) I'll post the pictures when I get them from my dear Auntie.

So it was such a fun day, one of the best actually. I was surrounded by my most favorite people and it was just incredible. Needless to say, we made friends with all of the interns, pages, and even the producer Don who I love on the set too. They really know how to treat their audience members there, and I love that. They gave us yummy hot dogs and root beer before the show too... I felt like I was in Bonnie's living room in Chicago. I was already too much of a Bonnie fan before I went, and seeing her live did not disappoint, I don't think I could love her any more. She was kind, sweet, and down right hysterical as usual.

So, my faithful blog readers, I'm obsessed with her. I'm convinced that one day I will meet Bonnie and we'll go out to lunch. She is not only makes me laugh, but she is truly inspiring to me. She's definitely on my list of people to meet in my lifetime. All the way home I was telling my mom about all of the ideas that I had about bringing something to her next time we go to the show. And we will be back for sure! Actually one of the friends that we made there at the show today told us that if we come back we'll be VIP guests, so Lord knows that I won't miss out on that opportunity!
Good times had by all. Thanks Bonnie! We had a ball! Please tune in to her show on NBC at 12:00 noon during the week. Trust me, it will be such a highlight of your day.

They're Back!!

In my previous post of all of the things I love about fall, I failed to mention what I am looking forward to most... my shows are back!!! NBC has been advertising this week as "National Stay at Home Week" which I think is funny, and quite fitting. I for one will be glued to the screen tonight to tune in to see what is going on with the cast of Grey's and see what will happen at Seattle Grace in the 2 hour premiere. Tonight, September 25th, I have absolutely no plans of being productive or furthering my education... I will be drinking tea, eating popcorn and taking in the glory that is Grey's!

Welcome Fall

Today is the first day of fall, and I would like to say welcome to my favorite season! I just love the start of a new season. Not only is it a fresh start, but it's symbolic of the changing seasons of life too. Today is a day that marks a new beginning and a new season, and I love that! Fall and winter are my two favorite seasons and I am excited for my favorite half of the year to begin!

To commemorate the new season, here are five things that I look forward to about Fall...

1.) Pumpkin Spice Lattes at Starbucks. Really, is there anything better?

2.) Leaves changing. I know that we live in CA, but there are still amazing maple trees that change beautiful shades of fall colors.

3.) The word "crisp." Don't you just love that word? And it only seems to surface in the fall when people describe the weather.

4.) Cool weather! I love cold weather and I am so ready for it after a warm summer. Time to break out the sweaters and fall clothes!

5.) New beginnings. This is the season that I will be making decisions! Big ones, small ones, career ones. But all... one step at a time.

So welcome fall! I am so happy to officially see you, and I welcome you with open arms!

Happy Birthday Thia!

Happy Birthday to my dear Thia Karen! I am so excited because today I get to pay tribute to her not only because it's her birthday, but because she is an incredible woman. I can't say enough about her on every other day of the year too! :) My aunt is kind, generous, hysterical, beautiful (inside and out) and has the biggest heart of anyone I know. She loves people deeply, and I love that about her. She has a million trillion friends and truly values each of them. I respect her so much and I am so incredibly blessed to have grown up with such a great rolemodel in my life. I can always count on her to cheer me up on a rough day. For those of you who know me well, I can rarely tell a story without it starting with "oh my gosh, my aunt karen..." She is not only an incredibly auntie, but I can honestly say that she is one of my very best friends!! I LOVE spending time with her whether it's going out and doing something fun, or staying in and watching movies. She is not only a great auntie, she is a wonderful mother. She has raised two of the most amazing boys. Travis and Chad are like brothers to me and I am so thankful to her for her incredible job with them. People often tell me, "oh you look so much like karen" or "wow, your mannerisms are so similar" and I say thank you thank you thank you! She is an incredible role model and I only hope to grow up to be more like her. Happy Birthday Thia, I love you with all my heart.

We're Off!

Well, we're off to our first Greek Wedding of the family! My cousin, Travis is getting married on Saturday and I could not be more thrilled for him. All of my life, I never thought that there would be anyone that would be worthy of marrying my "brothers"! However, I must say that when Ashlyn came into our lives, she came into our hearts too. I could not be more supportive and happy for them. I am so excited to see them get married, and I am even more excited to welcome Ashlyn into our family with open arms. Welcome to the big, fat Greek family Ash, we could not be more thrilled. We're not only going to be friends forever, we're family! :)

So, we're all off for the weekend! Tonight is the rehearsal dinner and tomorrow is the WEDDING! Here's to a fun filled weekend, and I'm bringing lots of tissues!

Pearls of Wisdom

Well, I must say that today was a day of good, and very timely I might add, advice! One of my favorite actresses, Bonnie Hunt, has a new talk show, and needless to say I tuned in to watch her first episode this afternoon. It's a cute show with an "old hollywood, Dean Martin" feel to it which I love. It was great, and her first guest (aside from Robin Williams) was her little 8 year old niece, who inspired her theme and intro for the show. Bonnie was talking to her about school and the advice that she had given her since she was a little girl. Bonnie looked right into the camera and says (in her midwestern charm of course)...

"Honey, you don't need no homework... you got talent."

This wonderful advice, not only had me laughing, but it cut right to the heart! After all of these nights cramming for exams, finishing projects and applications, I thought YES! Bonnie is right, I don't need no homework, I've got talent! :) I love this.

It also reminded me of the wonderful, and hysterical I might add, advice that my dear Thia has reminded me of lately... "It doesn't matter if one person doesn't like us, because there are a hundred more that do!!!"  :)

Thanks Thia, and thanks Bonnie. Fun pearls of wisdom that I will treasure always!

Internships...

Well, I think it's safe to say that I am completely buried in internship applications!! I am beginning to feel like this woman here at her desk. :) I am right in the middle of applying for Child Life Internships and I'm beginning to go a little bit crazy. I've been staying up until the wee hours of the morning trying to get cranking on these things, but they are just so clinical and complicated! I've been tempted more than once to raise one hand high above the pile of paperwork and wave the white flag in sweet surrender. My kitchen table is covered with paperwork, resumes, essays and file folders! It's almost like applying to schools all over again... I'm applying across the country hoping that a hospital will take me. It doesn't help that these things are so competitive, but I am entirely trusting in the Lord! Please pray for inspiration, and more importantly... divine intervention! :)

Happy Birthday Mom!

"A mother is the truest friend we have. When trials, heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when troubles thicken around us, still she will cling to us and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts."
- Washington Irving

Today is my Mom's Birthday, and I could not be more thankful for her. She is one of the most incredible people I know, and I am so privileged to be able to call her mom. She is beautiful, kind, gracious, patient, generous, interesting, loving, and a real blast! She is one of those people that warms a room with her smile, and she is by far the most selfless person I know.

Happy Birthday, Mom, and thanks for being you!!!

Friendship

I have been thinking a lot about friendship lately and how very important it is. Friendship is truly one of the greatest gifts that we can give and receive. Whenever I am feeling down, or just not myself, a conversation with one of my dear friends always picks me right up. True friendship is good for our souls, and it inspires, encourages and loves unconditionally with no bounds. I have been truly blessed with the very best friends in the whole world, and for them I could not be more thankful. My friends mean the world to me, and there are certain soul connections that I could not live without. I don't know what I would do without knowing that I have people in my life that love me unconditionally and are there through thick and thin - through the tears and the side-splitting laughter. There really is nothing like a good laugh that makes you cry and laugh until your stomach hurts! Earlier this week, my mom reconnected with her high school best friend after 22 years. It was so fun to hear her talk on the phone with her, and hear the excitement in her voice as they reminisced and caught up on one another's lives. They laughed all the way through their 2 hour conversation, and it was so special to hear about this friendship and heart connection that is older than I am! This was especially great for me to witness because it gave me hope for the future, and reminded me that when two souls are connected, they are connected for life. Thank you to my friends... each one of you. You are so special to my heart, and for you I am truly grateful.

2008 Olympics

Okay, so I'm not ashamed to say that I am completely addicted to the Olympics! There is something so amazing about watching our country compete in the greatest sports competition of all time. The Olympics just seem to bring people together too, and I absolutely love that. For two weeks everybody just seems to forget what they are fighting over and sit down and cheer for their country. Whenever the US takes the gold (whether it's in fencing or gymnastics) and I hear our national anthem play, it gives me goosebumps and chills. I absolutely loved watching Michael Phelps crush world record after world record, and Nastia Liuken, and Shawn Johnson take gold and silver in the women's all around gymnastics. I love watching all of the Olympics, but there is something so amazing about watching volleyball! I was glued to the TV today watching the US Men's team beat Serbia in the most exciting game yet! However, two of my heroes have yet to play for the gold... Kerri Walsh and Misty May! You can do it girls, I have complete faith in you! Until then, I'll be glued to the TV! So, here's to a couple more days of US glory and... for these two weeks every four years, I am especially proud to be an American.

Les Mis at The Hollywood Bowl

This Saturday, I had the privilege of seeing Les Mis in concert at the Hollywood Bowl with my dear friend Mel! It was such a fun night, and it was really neat to be at the Hollywood Bowl. This is such a landmark in our city, and it was just so much fun to be there. Nestled in the Hollywood hills, The Bowl is just so "old hollywood" and there is so much history in that place. One of the best things about it is the fact that you can bring in any kind of food or drink that you want, so we brought in a picnic! We got there early so we could have dinner before the show. It was so cute to see how people do picnics, some went all out with candles and everything! It's also such a great place to people watch, which I love! There were some characters sitting around us which kept us laughing for sure. We had good food, good wine and great company!

It was so neat to hear the music of Les Mis coupled with the LA Philharmonic. I had never seen the LA Phil before and it was so neat to put their amazing talent with the power of the music from the best musical of our time. I found myself closing my eyes at certain points of the show and just listening to the music. This musical is so incredibly powerful, and it was so great to be reminded of why I love it so much. Every time I listen to the music whether its on stage, or in my CD player, I learn something new. Les Mis is perhaps the only theatre performance that has ever affected me to my absolute core. The play itself is far more than entertainment, it's an experience. I find myself thinking about it for days after, and I think that is a tell tale sign of its power. I think everyone should see the musical at least once in their lives for the amazing life lessons that we take from it. I hope to see it again and again, and until then I'll get the music any way I can!

Human Kindness

Sometimes it is difficult to believe that human kindness is an inherent quality that we have, and sometimes it can be so all too easy to loose our faith in it when we live in the world that we do. However, today was one of those days that I was so impressed with the kindness that I saw around me...

I went to the children's hospital today (CHOC) where I volunteer on Sunday afternoons. The hospital can be a difficult place, but this hospital does a great job of treating their patients as kids first and seems to really value their families. With that said, I walked in today (in somewhat of a hurry) and went to clock in. I heard a bunch of commotion in the cafeteria and took a minute to walk by and see what was going on. When I walked in, I saw a sea of people, party decorations, a big birthday cake and the man of the hour...a little boy who was surrounded by all of his friends and family celebrating his 4th birthday. This sight was so heartwarming. It would be so difficult to have to spend your birthday or a holiday in the hospital at any age, and it brought tears to my eyes to see this child's friends, family, and hospital staff together for one common goal... to celebrate this little guy's birthday. Today, he was not a patient, he was a kid surrounded by the people he loves most on a special Sunday afternoon.

Needless to say, it was a great day at CHOC, but definitely a busy one at that. So, some much needed R & R was required, so I hit the beach with my family for the evening to watch my dad surf and to sit on the beach... so relaxing!! As I was observing, I saw this poor girl loose her surfboard in the water (her leash must have been broken) and this man - a total stranger - swam way far out of his way to grab her board before the surf took it in. Another act of human kindness. Then a few minutes later, this man walks up to us and offers for us to join his family at the fire pit if we were getting cold. Human kindness... maybe it's not so uncommon. It is truly amazing what you see when you are looking for it. I find myself focusing too often on the annoying cashier at the local coffee house, or the angry driver next to me at the stop light. Human kindness often goes unnoticed, but when we take the time to look for it, it truly inspires us to do the same. Here's to human kindness and the hope that it continues to stick around for a while!

Congrats Archie ~

At the risk of sounding like a twelve year old girl, I wanted to extend my congratulations and support for David Archuleta for his new single that he released on a radio show today! I am so proud of this kid, it's not even funny. For those of you who think that I am a crazed fan, please let me explain. David Archuleta was runner up on American Idol last season and he absolutely held the hearts of America in the palm of his hand. This kid is so precious and has one of the greatest hearts. He captured America with his charm, grace and maturity beyond his years... not to mention a set of pipes that will bring tears to your eyes. I was a fan of his while watching the show (as much as I could be considering the fact that it was a TV show... even a "reality" show leaves you with questions like, "hmmm...I wonder what it is like in REAL life.) Well, that all changed when I was able to get tickets to the American Idol finale and I got to see him LIVE! Needless to say it was an amazing experience and for those of you that know me well, you know that I could not just sit back and watch, I had to be a part of this in some way.... well, let's just say that I met and talked to the Archuleta family for quite some time and his mother even hugged me! I thought I had died and gone to heaven. My mom and I cried through the performance finale and I was just so happy to be there, taking it all in. What an amazing time it was, and I will remember it always.

Congrats David, you have a wonderful career in front of you, and fans like me that are with you the whole way. :)

For those of you that would like to listen to his new song, I have included a link below for your enjoyment. :) After you get there, hit "click to listen."

"Krikac Party of Three"

I couldn't start my own blog without first introducing the most important part of my life - my family! I have the most incredible parents EVER and I am so blessed to be a part of their lives. Well, this is our family - Krikac party of three! My dad, my mom, and I... our very own family unit. The title of this blog is somewhat ironic because sometimes when we go out to a restaurant, we'll use an alias last name for fun (people can't usually pronounce ours anyway!) I am so blessed to be able to not only have incredible parents, but they are two of my very best friends. So, the next time you see Ken or Lindsay Krikac (or as we call them Kensay - their celebrity name) give them a big hug because they are just so wonderful! And, the next time that we go out to dinner maybe we'll use the name Jolie-Pitt to see if we get VIP service?

Welcome to my blog!!!

Welcome to my blog!  I am so excited for this fun new adventure... and I only have one person to thank for it... my dearest Thia Karen. She has a lovely blog which I visit daily, and she inspired me to have a place of my own to share funny thoughts, good stories and the everyday comings and goings of life. I absolutely love voyaging through everyday life with people I care about and I believe that the true joys of life are found in the everyday details. I hope to share these small pieces of my life with you here, and thank you for letting me do so. Here's to a new world of blogging and lots of fun new adventures!!!
